Typing game guide
Everything the game does, written down. The numbers match the game code.
Typing games and roguelikes
A typing game turns typing into play: you type words to stop or beat something.
The classic form is words falling from the top of the screen.
A roguelike is a short run that changes every time. Fall, and you start over.
You get stronger inside the run by picking up items along the way.
This game mixes the two. You type words to fight a monster on each floor.
What's different here
Fights are turn based with no timer. Typing right beats typing fast.
That's why slow typists can clear the first floor too.
Want a speed test? Word rain is the real-time mode.
Basic rules
A run has 7 floors. Floors 1 to 6 each have one weather monster.
Floor 7 is the Storm King. Type an old novel's line to the end to beat it.
Type any word on screen. Your keys decide the target.
Finish a word and the enemy loses HP equal to the word's key count.
Bring the enemy to 0 HP to clear the floor. You heal 4 HP.
At 0 HP your run ends. You start with 30 HP.
Enemy attacks
The enemy hits once every 5 words you finish. The boss hits every 4.
Every 2 typos, the enemy hits you once more right away.
Under the enemy's name you see words left before its attack and your typo count.
This game's rules in detail
Keys and targets
Each key you press must continue the start of some word on screen.
If you type t, h and both then and they are on screen, both stay targets.
The next key narrows it down, and the word ends the moment it matches.
A key that fits no word is a typo. It isn't typed, it's only counted.
Words on screen together never start with another whole word on screen.
Backspace takes back your last key. Typos you already made still count.
Korean words take keys by 2-set position: 가고 is ㄱ ㅏ ㄱ ㅗ, four keys.
Damage
Damage is the word's key count. English is one key per letter.
Capitals in the boss line need Shift, but Shift itself isn't counted.
Relics add their own rules on top. See the relic table below.
Floors and words
Floor 1 shows three words of 3 to 4 letters. Higher floors show more, longer words.
Floor 6 shows five words of 4 to 8 letters at once.
No word appears twice in the same run.
Daily run scoring
The daily run is set by the date and the word language. Everyone gets the same one.
Boss lines rotate through 420, so no line repeats for 420 days.
Score counts floors cleared, then HP left, then fewer typos.
The formula is floors × 10000 + HP × 100 + (99 − typos).
When the run ends, your key log goes to the ranking server, which replays the whole run and counts the score itself.
Ties go to the shorter time measured by the ranking server.
Play as often as you like. Each period keeps your best score.
Your runs
Runs stay in this browser's storage only. The last 300 are kept.
If a subscription ends, your runs stay. A subscription only shows the same runs in more detail.
Tips
There's no timer. Check the next key before you press it.
Longer words hit harder in one go.
Enemy attacks come by word count, so fewer, longer words means fewer hits taken.
Not sure? Backspace. Taking a key back is not a typo.
Getting further
With Heavy letters, favor words with k, w, y or v in them.
With Long words, 7-letter words double. They show up from floor 4.
Short combo only counts short words typed back to back. A long word resets it.
The Umbrella blocks the first hit on every floor. It pays off early.
From floor 5 the enemy's HP and hits grow. Save your HP before that.
Common snags
Nothing happens when I type
Click the board once. It only takes keys while it has focus.
Your IME setting doesn't matter. Korean words read the 2-set key positions.
Playing on a phone
Tap Open phone keyboard under the board to get an input box.
Turn off autocorrect and suggestions for this page, or they may add extra letters.
My name isn't on the board
Names come from a Gwirae account made on ranks.gwirae.com.
Without one your score still counts, shown as anonymous.
The 7 relics
After floors 1, 3 and 5 you see three relics you don't have yet, each equally likely. In the daily run everyone sees the same three.
| Relic | What it does | Chance to be offered first |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy letters | +2 damage for each j, k, q, v, w, x, y or z | 3/7 (42.8%) |
| Long words | Words of 7+ letters deal double damage | 3/7 (42.8%) |
| Second chance | First 2 typos on each floor don't count | 3/7 (42.8%) |
| Short combo | 3 short words (4 letters or fewer) in a row: +8 on the third | 3/7 (42.8%) |
| Wide eyes | One more word on screen | 3/7 (42.8%) |
| Umbrella | Blocks the first enemy hit on each floor | 3/7 (42.8%) |
| Big heart | Max HP +10, heal 10 now | 3/7 (42.8%) |
Where the words come from
Korean words come from the National Institute of Korean Language list. Boss lines and English words come from novels by authors who died before 1955, and the Korean constitution.
- Korean words: nouns from the NIKL Korean Learner's Vocabulary List (2003), KOGL Type 1
- English words: words that appear more than 8 times in the English novels below
